Date: Wednesday September 25th 2013
Time: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Place: Toronto, Danforth CTI, 800 Greenwood Ave., Rm A76
Topic: Tools for Teaching Energy

Start the year off right with a new teaching strategy. Chris will introduce you to energy flow diagrams and bar charts - powerful tools that will help your students effectively picture and conceptualize energy. These tools are great not just for gr. 11 and 12 physics, but any course where you discuss energy (chemists? biologists? are you listening?) Along the way he will help you to rebuild and restructure how you think about energy according to the latest in physics education research. You will leave armed with well-tested lessons plans for both 11 and 12 physics which you could use the next day (even though you won't be getting to energy for a little while yet ... but you could).

Chris Meyer completed a Specialist Degree in Physics at the University of Toronto, but didn’t really get this physics stuff until he began teaching. From his experiences “teaching” physics at A. Y. Jackson (North York), the Ontario Science Centre, Rosedale Heights (Toronto) and now York Mills C. I. (North York) he came to realize that the teaching techniques he was raised with were not adequate. After attending a lecture by Edward Redish at the University of Toronto, and becoming acquainted for the first time with Physics Education Research, things began to change. Now Chris gives presentations across southern Ontario encouraging teachers to stop teaching

If you are coming please email Chris Meyer so we have enough pizza and pop at 4:00.

Afterwards: Please join us afterwards for further discussion and liberations and Sarah's Bistro - two blocks away
